Chabad Recognized on Capitol Hill

This past week Capitol Hill was buzzing at the annual Living Legacy Leadership Conference put on by American Friends of Lubavitch Chabad.

The topic of the Living Legacy conference: The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson's and Chabad’s achievements in the areas of education, morality and charity for which he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1994.
One after another, Jews and non Jews from both side of the political aisle came up to the podium and proclaimed their friendship to Chabad, the Jewish people and the State of Israel in front of a crowd that included Chabad-Lubavitch Shluchim, supporters and student leaders.

Emergency Short Term Funding

Emergency Short Term Funding Requests on the Rise

This week we had many requests for emergency short term funding. Local community members who simply cannot pay their bills. People without phone service, without money for gas and groceries.

CJC works with each family and situation and uses its referral system to help with counseling, funding and support. When possible we are able to help people with actual funds. Our funds are limited and therefore it is becoming increasingly more challenging to keep up with the demands. The Community Responds

Last week we reported to you the need for funding of our camp scholarship fund. We are happy to report that our scholarship fund has received over $3,000 towards the Ethel Stein Camp Scholarship Fund. The scholarship committee was able to fill many of the requests that were waiting and now the children are in camp. Thank you so very much to all those that came forward to help out. A few examples of Chabad's community outreach efforts in our community this week:

2 Jewish inmates who are serving time in county jail were visited, a homeless couple was given a night’s stay in a local motel, 3 families received a camp scholarship, a teen was counseled on direction in life, legal help and referral, helped family with medical emergency, job search and counseling, divorce attorney referral, helped get kosher food for inmates, a young man who is ill was visited and a few community people received spiritual counseling.

CJC Hebrew School Students Visit Jewish Seniors

One of the hallmarks of CJC is it's focus on community outreach and being there for community members in times of need. CJC Hebrew School students are getting hands on experience and loving it. The students have been visiting seniors in board and cares and senior living facilities and bringing them some joy. The students and seniors have created a special bond and the seniors and the students both look forward to these visits. Even after Hebrew School was over students volunteered to go and visit these seniors.

CJC Teens Reach Out To The Teen Project

In a most beautiful display of unity CJC teens have reached out to the Teen project, a group home for foster children who have matured and have nowhere to go. The CJC teens made ceramic dishes with inspirational messages for them.

Recently the Teen Project, run by CJC supporter Lauri Burns, had a grand opening of their beautiful remodeled home in Lake Forest. CJC teens and rabbis where on hand for a special mezzuzah ceremony. The CJC teens brought a full breakfast as well as spiritual home decorations with special blessings fr the teens. This was all coordinated by the CTeeN director Ammie Levy.

One of the CJC teens had this to say about the experience, "It was really special and felt good to be a part of this, I am very happy for them, the home is cool and beautiful, I wish them lots of luck".

Lifting Spirits in South OC;

A few examples of Chabad's community outreach efforts in our community this week:

An elderly man who was ill and needed support, a woman going through a divorce, a young woman diagnosed with breast cancer, a young man in a car accident, a middle aged woman having a spiritual crisis, a lonely new mom, a child with anxiety, a businessman in dire financial and legal need, a pregnant mother who is on bed-rest, an unemployed man with emergency funds, new parents with parenting advice, a Jewish family that was disconnected from their Judaism; helping them reconnect with their Jewish roots, a young man with dementia, a mature woman coping with the loss of her father, a young woman with loss of her mother, a middle aged woman going through an ugly divorce, many people looking for work, a family that was losing their home, a child with special needs, a homeless woman, families with small children with scholarships for summer camp and many others. All this is made possible by The Circle.

A Mitzvah Comes Full Circle After 70 Years

70 years a young man's family could not afford to send this young man to camp. He was very fortunate that he was given a scholarship and was able to attend a Jewish camp and had an amazing summer. he never forgot the kindness that was shown to him and he recently made a contribution to the CJC Ethel Stein Camp Scholarship fund making it possible for a child to attend an entire summer at Camp Gan Israel.
