Mazal Tov! Our School, The Hebrew Academy in Huntington Beach, was one of the top 20 winners in the Kohl's ccontest. In a few weeks it should be verified and they will be official winners of $500,000. Thanks to your votes, we could not have won without the great support of the entire community.

Success Stories From JBC

This past week close to 40 people from the business sector of our community came togather for a wonderful networking event. The main objective of the evening is to help local businesses and business men and women in generating more leads and revenue in a warm and friendly enviorment. This week some amazing things happened, here is one example. There was a fellow there who was a controller for various small to medium sized companies and was looking to find a new company to work for. The first circle he sat in and shared his story and background went with no success. In the second smaller circle he sat in it looked even less likely that anyone sitting around the circle could help him. When it came his turn he shared like everyone else. After the sharing was done a woman from the circle walked over to him and asked for his resume. Turns out her husband is a recruiter and before she left for the JBC meeting he mentioned to her that he was looking for a controler. And just like that a connection was made.

For many, the teenage years tend to be the most formative of a person’s life. During that time, what people learn, do, whom they meet and become involved with will very likely affect their character and virtues for the rest of their lives. A home-schooled child is likely to grow up reclusive, while a public-schooled child is likely to become more outgoing. Many, if not all, parents recognize this; many, if not all, extracurricular activities and programs take this idea into account. For Orange County Jewish parents seeking to keep their teens interested in Judaism as they progress through such an important stage of life, Chabad of Mission Viejo has many answers, among them the ever-popular Hebrew High program.

“In our Hebrew High program, students learn the Hebrew language,” explained Rabbi Zalman Marcus. “They also receive high school or college credit for doing the program.”

The aim of the program is to guide teenagers — Jewish and non-Jewish — towards the kind of fluency where they may write and communicate in Hebrew. The accommodation of the Chabad’s Hebrew High classes ranges from beginner to advanced, so even those who wish to muscle up on their Hebrew may enroll without the class being too easy.

“Our teaching staff is really great,” Rabbi Marcus says. “Nurturing, caring, and they’re Israeli themselves. They have great credentials. Once of our main teachers even teaches at UC Irvine.”

UCI students who have taken Hebrew at the university will know that the rabbi is referring to Racheli Morris, a kindhearted Israeli who currently serves as UCI’s sole Hebrew teacher. Past students of Morris will testify that her apparent dedication to Israel and the Hebrew language seem to be the motivating factors of her job, rather than the paychecks. Her students tend to enter the beginner class unsure of what to expect in the language and emerge from her advanced level holding conversations with each other in Hebrew and making plans to visit Israel. Many students end up keeping in correspondence with her even after completing her class.

“Our teaching staff makes it fun,” Rabbi Marcus said of the Hebrew High program. “We take the students to Israeli restaurants, so they can get a feeling for what Israel is like. We play Hebrew games as well. I asked the students who finished the program last year to rate it on a scale of one to ten. They all rated it either a nine or ten, so we can see that they’re enjoying it. We’re happy about that.”

The Hebrew High groups are “small and intimate,” as Rabbi Marcus put it, depending on the enrollment size of each class. Some students are from Jewish day schools, others have no Hebrew background, and others wish to learn the language so they can take their SATs in Hebrew. Between the three locations offering Hebrew High in Mission Viejo, Los Alamitos, and Yorba Linda, the total enrollment of the Hebrew High program sits at around 100 students,

For parents not entirely interested in the Hebrew High program but still intent on finding opportunities for their children to learn about their Jewish heritage, the Mission Viejo Chabad also offers a variety of other programs.

One of the more popular programs, CTeen, currently caters to 8^th and 9^th grade students and is planned to encompass 10^th graders next year. A twice-a-month program, CTeen incorporates learning and social activities as well as engaging students in activities that benefit others, such as helping the victims of the Haiti quake or those at senior centers. CTeen also occasionally functions in tandem with another program named the Jewish Learning Institute (JLI). JLI addresses a number of different hot topics for Jewish teenagers and has a current national enrollment of over 1,000 students. One class of the program, titled “MySpace: YourSpace,” teaches teens about their responsibility to themselves and others. It helps them learn how much of other people’s lives is their business. Another such program, titled “Welcome to Hollywood,” discusses how Hollywood values contrast with Jewish values, how they coincide, and what students can learn from both. Inspired by the increasingly unorthodox nature of modern media, this program incorporates video clips of various movies in order to run its activities and classes. Other programs include one that deals with moral questions — such as risking one’s life to save another’s — as well as “Israel 3D.” Israel 3D helps students formulate a 3D picture of Israel, its people, places, and history. As Israel is always in the news these days, this is one program many parents will want to consider.

“[The teenage years] are very important in a person’s life,” Rabbi Marcus explained. “Our demographic around here is very small, only two to three percent of the population. So it’s a critical time for people to learn about their Jewish roots. Children who do so through our programs develop a great foundation by the time they go off to college. A lot of them come back to thank us, because they benefited tremendously from it.”

The rabbi added, “Regardless of religion, temple affiliation, knowledge of Hebrew, political affiliation or otherwise, our programs are for everyone and anyone.”

It can be very easy for people to lose track of their faith growing up in a secular society such as ours. The programs that the Mission Viejo Chabad offers are designed to help Jewish children strengthen their connections with each other and build a formidable sense of identity. Not only do they develop a better sense of Jewish values, but they also get a head start in Hebrew and learn about morals.

“We are very proud we have a Hebrew school,” Rabbi Marcus concluded. “And we are very thrilled about the attention rate we are seeing in the children. They don’t feel like [our programs] are a chore; they get excited about them. They see them as a privilege. It’s thrilling to see that excitement in children.”

CJC partnered with A&D Recycling to raise much needed funds for CJC’s Hebrew School and other educational programs.

Thanks to the help of Norm Rosenkrantz the event was announced in the Orange County Register local section, and on the Mission Viejo community board, which resulted in a very nice turnout. Thank you so much to all that turned out and supported this event.

Close to $500 was raised so far and will go directly to funding our scholarship requests for Hebrew School.

There are plans underway for a folowup event in a few months. Stay tuned for more details.

A Facebook Mitzvah

A Bar Mitzvah at Age 91

This past week a 91 year old man with a terminal illness celebrated his Bar Mitzvah. Due to his difficult childhood he was never given the chance to celebrate his becoming a Jewish man. He always thought it was too late and gave up on ever being able to celebrate it. Rabbi Marcus visited him and his family and after finding out that he had not celebrated his Bar Mitzvah explained that it is never too late and right there and then proceeded to make a Bar Mitzvah celebration. It was a very emotional experience and a very joyful one.

Here is part of an email that was received in response to this very special occasion. “Dear Rabbi Marcus, You have gone way beyond what I would have expected. Your visit brought G-d back into my family.

CJC is partnering with A&D Recycling to raise much needed funds for CJC’s Hebrew School and other educational programs.

On August 29, 9:30 am – 2:00 pm, we will be collecting any and all old and even broken electronic devices. From tv’s to cell phone and anything in between, batteries also accepted. If it plugs in to an electrical socket we’ll take it.

All this E-waste will be recycled so you will be helping the environment, CJC will get $ for every pound we collect. (sorry fridges, freezers and other large appliances not accepted). You can even drop them off before the 29th. Make sure to call in advance so we can properly process you drop off.

Let us know by email if you are joining and what you are bringing so we can prepare.

Coming Back to Hebrew School at 17

It is every Hebrew School directors dream that when students graduate from Hebrew School that they would want to stay connected somehow with their Judaism, their community and with Hebrew School. Today there is a waiting list of former students who want to be part of the Hebrew School team. There are even students who are off in college and want to use their break time to come and speak to the Hebrew School students about their experience. Many Hebrew school graduates make sure to stop by CJC to say goodbye before they go off to college, the navy or Israel.

Below is an excerpt of a college application essay written by one of our former Hebrew School students about her experience of being a part of the Hebrew School staff.

Eager, disinterested, anxious, confident. I read the faces gazing up at me. I wondered what they read in my face. Hopefully I projected my own excitement to teach them, and concealed my nervousness for running my own class. It was the first day of Hebrew school and these third graders waited for me, their teacher. I could not believe I now stood before them – after all, it seemed like yesterday when I filled their shoes. I once struggled to learn this new language, to read with fluency, to write with distinction. From a five year old girl to a young teen I worked my way through Hebrew school; as I neared the end I thought I would never return. Now, I stood here, yet again. I am fortunate I did. The more I taught, the more I yearned to return to my days as a Hebrew school student. I missed Judaic studies, Hebrew class, group prayers. Shame burnt my face when I recalled my lack of appreciation as a student. However through educating these children, I could understand how to educate myself. I channeled my revived fervor towards their learning experience. We reviewed the Hebrew alphabet – aleph, bet, vet, gimmel, they repeated. Simple words gradually lengthened. Some students fell behind; some lost the glow they once possessed. I encouraged them with new challenges, raising them to the top. We prevailed together. As the year progressed, I saw improvement in my students. Each child drew from his own source of inspiration to get through the class. Pride swelled inside of me as their once frustrated, stern looks transformed into looks of confidence and joy. The year soon came to an end. My first out of three more years of teaching.

Reflecting back, I realize how many valuable qualities I gained. My own responsibility increased because – whether they admitted it or not - these children looked up to me as a role model, a mentor. I had to lead by example. My once quiet attitude seemed to melt off the more I worked with these children. Conversing with adults and peers became more comfortable. When a child refused to read, or had uncontrollable fits of laughter, patience emerged as my hero. I remained calm; waited out the storm until opportunity arose to continue my efforts. If a child failed, then I failed. If a child excelled, then I excelled. The result of my work will always reflect how much I put into it. I must always put my passion, my determination, my little piece of history into what matters the most. Through my own experience and knowledge, I embrace the opportunity to pass down these meaningful traditions. Teaching such a rich, ancient language has been a great honor. I am even more grateful that I have been able to make a difference in these kids’ lives – whether by helping them conquer a tough word, or guiding them through a personal problem. This experience has transformed my face; it now reads capable, determined, confident, and eager.

Lifting Spirits in South OC; The Circle in Action

From the mailbox:

Almost 3 years ago I faced a spiritual crisis in my life. I was in great emotional pain and all the years of personal therapy were not helping me to find a solution of how I could heal this situation. During this time I was at a Bar Mitzvah and the Rabbi spoke of the importance of forgiveness. After the ceremony I walked up and to my surprise I asked the Rabbi if I could speak with him. (At that time Judaism was not the first place I sought spiritual enlightenment.)

I told him my story and my struggle with forgiving those that had hurt me so deeply and yet told by one of the commandments that I was to honor them. He told me that the Rabbi’s had spent many years asking this same question and came to the belief that you forgive 3 times. These words were the beginning of my rebirth of my Judaic soul. I spent over a year meeting with this Rabbi on a monthly basis and looking deeper at my relationship with G-d and His place in my life.

A year ago I met Rabbi Marcus. My father who is in a retirement home kept telling me about this Rabbi who came to visit him at the home. Thinking he was delusional I did not pursue it. He kept telling me the Rabbi wanted to talk with me and gave me his phone number.

Reluctantly I called Rabbi Marcus. Why reluctantly? He was a Chabad Rabbi and I had been “taught and told” these people were radicals. Rabbi and I spoke and we agreed to meet. Feeling this would be best for my relationship with my dad I agreed to meet with him. Little did I know this would be the beginning of an amazing journey that would take me to a spiritual place I only dreamed I could get to.

At the first meeting I told Rabbi my truth about my relationship with my family and what I had been taught by my other Rabbi. Surprisingly he understood what I was saying and agreed with what I had been doing and encouraged me to continue to what was working for me and added that my only job as a son was to be a dutiful child. This was the relief I had been looking for.

Wanting to give something back I offered to provide services for free to any member who needed it. Rabbi invited me to study the Torah with him in order to understand the Chabad. I agreed to do this. Thus began a weekly study where it has become more of a deep personal relationship between 2 men of different lifestyles and lives intersecting and learning more about us while bringing me closer to my Judaic soul.

Today the reason G-d brought Rabbi Marcus into my life became clearer then it ever has. Due to an increased workload I have been unable to meet regularly with Rabbi as I had. In the midst of a painful experience I contacted Rabbi to share with him what was going on. He told me my emotional child was hurt and not to take what had occurred personally. Within moments I remembered what I had learned mere weeks ago about what Moses had stated when he came down from the mountain. “Thou shall not worship any other G-d but one.”

In this one moment a light came over me. I said to Rabbi, “I need to remember, that by giving others power I am forsaking the one and only G-d I pray to.” He laughed and said, “You are half way there.” I thanked him for once again being there when I needed spiritual solace and a reminder that in the end it always comes down to my letting go and letting G-d.

Everyday I sit and listen as people share their pain and joy with me. Everyday I use what I have been taught to help people find their own spiritual healing even if they are not aware of it. I am blessed that I chose to stop listening to the tapes that have been running all my life and started listening the one true voice G-d.

For example we now have many requests for camp scholarships and our scholarship funds have already been disbursed. There are children waiting for our response.

There are many people who are ill and need support during this difficult time. There are many people who need spiritual support, advice and other forms of help. Camp Gan Israel Week 1 Report

Camp Gan Israel Receives Funding from Jewish Federation

Camp Gan Israel has received funding from the Jewish Federation – Passport to Jewish Life Fund. The funds will offset the cost of camp for those campers who applied. CGI would like to thank those who have put this fund together and who have made these funds available so that children can attend camp.

A few examples of Chabad's community outreach efforts in our community this week:

2 Jewish inmates who are serving time in county jail were visited, a homeless couple was given a night’s stay in a local motel, 3 families received a camp scholarship, a teen was counseled on direction in life, legal help and referral, helped family with medical emergency, job search and counseling, divorce attorney referral, helped get kosher food for inmates, a young man who is ill was visited and a few community people received spiritual counseling.

Camp Gan Israel Staff Training Begins

Intense training has begun for the new staff at CGI. This training program prepares them for the upcoming 6 weeks of super summer fun. Safety procedures, camp activities, camper medical information, trip and park rules and much more are covered in this course.

Every year camp has a theme that runs throughout the camp adding much excitement and fun to the Jewish experience at CGI. “It is very cool, upbeat and exciting”, was all the tight lipped counselors would say about this year’s theme.

Camp begins this Monday and continues for 6 weeks. For more information about camp or to register online go to www.silvergan.com.

Adult Education News:

New JBSE Series to Begin

A new JBSE (Jewish Bible Study Experience) series has been announced. It will begin July 26^th and run for 4 weeks. More details will be announced shortly.

Torah Talk Update

The weekly Torah Talk group has gotten off to a great start. The class focuses on the weekly Torah portion with emphasis on the oral Torah’s comments and insights. The class is open to all and is lay led by Jeff Rosenthal. The class usually meets every Tuesday night from 7:30-9pm. This weeks class is on Wednesday, June 30^th. No prior background or knowledge is necessary.

Kabbalah Class on Saturday Mornings

The weekly Kabbalah class by Rabbi Marcus is going strong. A few years ago the class began studying the Tanya and they are nearly finished the first book. The discussions that come up cover a variety of topics; some examples from last week: The movie Avatar and Kabbalah, the kabbalistic meaning of free choice and the meaning of Jewish choseness. This class meets every Saturday morning from 9-10:15 am. All are welcome.

Chabad Recognized on Capitol Hill

This past week Capitol Hill was buzzing at the annual Living Legacy Leadership Conference put on by American Friends of Lubavitch Chabad.

The topic of the Living Legacy conference: The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson's and Chabad’s achievements in the areas of education, morality and charity for which he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1994.
One after another, Jews and non Jews from both side of the political aisle came up to the podium and proclaimed their friendship to Chabad, the Jewish people and the State of Israel in front of a crowd that included Chabad-Lubavitch Shluchim, supporters and student leaders.

7th Grade Hebrew School Publishes Booklet on Jewish Rituals

That's right the 7th graders of CJC's Hebrew School have published their own how-to booklet on Jewish rituals connected to Bar Mitzvah.

It is in a power point format with step-by-step instructions on how to pt on a talit, put on Teffilin, get called to the Torah and how to raise and wrap the Torah. Each step is accompanied by a picture where the students demonstrate exactly how to perform the instruction.

"this was a very fun project and I really enjoyed working on it" was one of the responses from the proud students.

One of the parents who viewed the presentation commented, "I think this should be made available to all synagogues and to as many people as possible, this makes these rituals accessible to anyone with little or no previous background".

The entire presentation will be up on our website in the near future.

A big mazal tov and congratulation to all the 7th grade boys and to their teacher Rabbi Marcus for this wonderful accomplishment.

Community Outreach News: CJC Hebrew School Students Visit Jewish Seniors

One of the hallmarks of CJC is it's focus on community outreach and being there for community members in times of need. CJC Hebrew School students are getting hands on experience and loving it. The students have been visiting seniors in board and cares and senior living facilities and bringing them some joy. The students and seniors have created a special bond and the seniors and the students both look forward to these visits. Even after Hebrew School was over students volunteered to go and visit these seniors.

CJC Teens Reach Out To The Teen Project

In a most beautiful display of unity CJC teens have reached out to the Teen project, a group home for foster children who have matured and have nowhere to go. The CJC teens made ceramic dishes with inspirational messages for them.

Recently the Teen Project, run by CJC supporter Lauri Burns, had a grand opening of their beautiful remodeled home in Lake Forest. CJC teens and rabbis where on hand for a special mezzuzah ceremony. The CJC teens brought a full breakfast as well as spiritual home decorations with special blessings fr the teens. This was all coordinated by the CTeeN director Ammie Levy.

One of the CJC teens had this to say about the experience, "It was really special and felt good to be a part of this, I am very happy for them, the home is cool and beautiful, I wish them lots of luck".

A few examples of Chabad's community outreach efforts in our community this week:

An elderly man who was ill and needed support, a woman going through a divorce, a young woman diagnosed with breast cancer, a young man in a car accident, a middle aged woman having a spiritual crisis, a lonely new mom, a child with anxiety, a businessman in dire financial and legal need, a pregnant mother who is on bed-rest, an unemployed man with emergency funds, new parents with parenting advice, a Jewish family that was disconnected from their Judaism; helping them reconnect with their Jewish roots, a young man with dementia, a mature woman coping with the loss of her father, a young woman with loss of her mother, a middle aged woman going through an ugly divorce, many people looking for work, a family that was losing their home, a child with special needs, a homeless woman, families with small children with scholarships for summer camp and many others. All this is made possible by The Circle.

A Mitzvah Comes Full Circle After 70 Years

70 years a young man's family could not afford to send this young man to camp. He was very fortunate that he was given a scholarship and was able to attend a Jewish camp and had an amazing summer. he never forgot the kindness that was shown to him and he recently made a contribution to the CJC Ethel Stein Camp Scholarship fund making it possible for a child to attend an entire summer at Camp Gan Israel.

100% Retention Rate at CJC Hebrew School

CJC Hebrew School students are staying on after their Bar/Bat Mitzvah's. This year CJC has seen a 100% retention of post Bar/Bat Mitzvah students who have enrolled in the very successful CTeeN program, Chabad's new international teen program.

One student commented, "I cant wait for my Bar Mitzvah to be over so that I can start practicing my Judaism and go to CTeeN".

CJC Hebrew School speculates that it is the camaraderie of the students, parent involvement and a very capable CTeeN director that is producing these results.

3. Late Night Learning

It is Jewish tradition to stay up late on the first night of Shavuot and study Torah in preparation for the reading of the 10 commandments the next morning, in that spirit you are welcome to join us at 10pm at the Rabbi's home for some late night learning. There will be formal and informal study groups that you can join.

With sadness we inform you of the passing of a very brave and special boy Daniel Kerner who passed away this past week. click here for an article and picture about Daniel.

The funeral will be this Sunday, April 18, at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, 2pm. May G-d send comfort and love to the Kerner family and may they be comforted by Daniel’s great contribution to the advancement of stem cell research.

Holocaust speaker: “So You Will Remember” – Rose De Liema’s story of survival

Rose De Liema

Rose De Liema, is a Holocaust Survivor who has an unwavering commitment to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and its victims. Rose, who is now 88, speaks to school children, and adults of all faiths and religions.

Rose grew up in Holland in a “happy, peace-loving, good Jewish family.” She married Sal De Liema in December 1942 and in her wedding photo her bridal bouquet concealed the yellow “Jood” stars she and her new husband were forced to wear. Rose and Sal spent some time in hiding before being taken to concentration camps. Rose and Sal De Liema met the Frank family (Anne¹^, her sister Margot, her father Otto and their mother) in August 1944 at the Westerbork transit camp. (Sal De Liema and Otto Frank were also together in Auschwitz.) The De Liemas had a lifelong friendship with Otto Frank (who died in 1980, at the age of 91). Rose and Sal De Liema (now deceased) were featured in director Jon Blair's 1996 Academy-Award winning documentary Anne Frank Remembered.

Rose (who lives in Orange County, CA) has written a manuscript, “So You Will Remember – A Mother Writes to Her Children,” detailing her experiences in the Shoah. Click here to view the entire 45 page manuscript.

* Community Seder Round Up: CJC’s Community Seder was a wonderful, fun, warm and inspirational experience. The Seder ended at a record breaking time of 9:45pm it was 3 hours from start to finish. “I was very impressed with timing and professionalism of this Seder” said one very happy attendee. Although there were 99 RSVP’s it was warm and intimate. The food was served at 6:45pm so that no one was hungry and everyone was able to enjoy the rest of the Seder. There was plenty of schmoozing, eating, singing and insights that kept the night moving and fun. A special thank you to our teens, Alena Cisneros, Bella Kaplan, and Josh Rubin who helped serve as well and Karen Drescher who helped coordinate all the food.

* With sadness we inform you of the passing of Edward Hayworth, father of Karyn Hahn. May G-d comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Passover Tidbits

1. The tradition of selling your Chometz was never easier. You can now sell your Chametz online. Click here for your online form. Not sure what this is? Click here for more information.

2. This Shabbat is called Shabbat Hagadol the “great Shabbat”. The signs of redemption were already being felt before they actually left.

3. Shmurah Matzah: Special hand baked, round matzah is the best matzah to use for your seder, the taste is not all that matters, it’s spiritually the closest to what we ate going out of Egypt. If you would like some shmurah matzah, we would love to share some with you as our gift. Call 770-1270 or email chabad@chabadofmv.com to pick some up.

4. Sunday night search for the Chametz,

5. Fast of the first born. There is a tradition that all first born sons are supposed to fast on the day before Passover to remember that we were saved. For those who would like to eat the custom is to hear a “Siyum” – a conclusion to a Talmudic tractate that was studied and completed. Join us this Monday morning, March 29, for this special tradition. 8 am services, 8:30 am Siyum.

6. Monday cease to eat chametz by 10:50am, and burn by 11:51am.

7. Tuesday night begins 49 day mitzvah--counting the Omer.

8. Passover Holiday services: We will be having Passover services on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, March 30 & 31 at 10 am.

Our 7^th grade of Hebrew School visited Heritage Point this past Sunday and had an interactive Bar Mitzvah experience with the seniors.

Community Passover Seder

Join us for a community Passover seder on the first night of Passover. There is limited space and seats fill up quickly, please don’t wait until the last minute unless you have no choice.
Early Bird Special is $40 per adult, $25 per child. After March 26, $45, $30.

Scholarships available. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Please let us know if you would like to sponsor someone so that they can attend.
